Payne's Grey

Exhibited here are a few patterns printed in Payne's grey underglaze.  Examples  in this color are rare and would have been produced during the period between 1822 and 1833.   Payne’s Grey is a general artist's term for a softened down black, named after 18th century British water color artist, William Payne, 1760-1830.  While today this color is known to have a blue tint, in the past it also could have exhibited brown or green hues.  Some of the Spode examples have a milky or cloudy appearance.
