Indian and Oriental

Spode produced two major series of patterns that sought to further stimulate the keen interest of the British public in the exotic, far-away places featured in popular travel books of the period.  Spode's designers used as inspiration the many fine examples of engraved prints included in these publications.  This section of the exhibition focuses on two major series:  Indian Sporting and Caramanian.  A common border pattern was designed for each series to be used on all shapes produced for that series.  Designers then created a different central pattern for each shape.  These series patterns were particularly popular in dinner and dessert wares.
