The pattern is named for the border design on this earthenware dinner plate with gadrooned edge. The name Ship Border is derived from Spode's pattern number 3067 which features a ship in a Chinese harbor scene within the same border. This border design was one that Spode used with over 50 different central patterns including Chinoiserie scenes and floral groups.
