Asparagus Rests

Pattern Category: Chinese Influence

Object Type: Dinner and Dessert Wares

Dimensions:

  • Length: 3.25 inches
  • Width: 3.25 inches

Description:

These two examples of early earthenware asparagus rests are printed in blue underglaze in the Willow 1 pattern.  According to Drakard and Holdway, the exact method of use is not known today.  They suggest that asparagus could have been placed in them in the kitchen and, thus, would be preserved from damage while being transferred to the diner's plate.  This unusual shape was described by other manufacturers as shells or small plates.
