Low Dutch Jug

Description:

This low Dutch-shaped earthenware jug was printed in a very rare pattern known as "Chinese of Rank."   The source for the design has been identified as an aquatint entitled "A Chinese of Rank" by Thomas and William Daniell in Picturesque Voyages to India by the way of China, London, 1810.  Attribution of this pattern to Spode is made based on several copper engravings of this pattern retained in the Spode archives and an egg stand marked SPODE that is known.  The pattern was also made by Miles Mason.  This shape is found  in the 1820 Shape Book.  See the link to page 33 below.
