Well and Tree Platter

Description:

This large platter is printed in underglaze blue with one of Spode's most popular patterns, known as Italian.    A Claude Lorraine pastoral landscape painting (c. 1638) was the inspiration for the center scene, and an original Chinese design was used for the border.  Printed on the back side of the platter is Spode's transfer-printed label that promotes the fact that the company applied the principle of using only native English cobalt.  Robert Copeland found that, later, Spode removed "Wheal" from the mark as it meant the same as "Mine" in Cornwall.  The mark is shown below.
