Description: This early pattern is printed in blue underglaze on a New Indented earthenware dinner plate. This is one of two versions of Buffalo, or Boy on a Buffalo, included in this exhibit. It is one of Spode's earliest Chinoiserie patterns. The design was taken from an original Chinese Export porcelain pattern and was made by several potteries in the late 18th century. Its popularity continued for about 50 years. Most examples that survive today are not marked making it difficult to attribute objects to a particular maker. Robert Copeland has documented the variations in the pattern and labeled them "A-E." Spode produced Type A and B. This is an example of Type A.
