Description:

This scarce pattern dating from 1815 to 1825 is seen here printed in blue underglaze on an earthenware foot bath.  Robert Copeland suggests that the design might have been derived from a Japanese porcelain plate made at the Arita kilns for the Dutch East India Company and that the birds might be ho-ho birds, or phoenixes.  Leonard Whiter had called the pattern Old Peacock, although this name does not appear in the print record book.  In addition to the impressed SPODE mark,  this example also has transfer-printed mark 33.
