Trophies Nankin

Pattern Category: Based on Chinese Originals

Object Type: Dinner and Dessert Wares

Dimensions:

  • Diameter: 8.75 inches

Description:

The Trophies Nankin pattern is seen here on an early indented pearlware soup dish. This version of the pattern is printed in a "hazy" blue underglaze.  It is one of four Trophies patterns produced by Spode that use Chinese trophy symbols. The others, also included in this exhibit, are Trophies Etruscan, Trophies Marble and Trophies Dagger or Fitzhugh. The Four Treasures are represented in the pattern by the symbols of the four fine arts: music, chess, calligraphy and painting. The central medallion represents The Hundred Antiques.  The border pattern is the same as used on the standard Willow pattern.
