Literature, Mythology and the Arts

Searching for new design inspiration and opportunities to reach additional markets of interest, Spode turned to well-known literary themes and subjects in the performing arts to create new patterns for its wares. Two major design series emerged: Aesop's Fables and the Greek pattern series. A common border pattern was designed for each series to be used on all shapes produced for that series. Designers then created a different central pattern for each shape. These two pattern series, along with a few individual patterns, similar in thematic content, are included in this section of the exhibit.
