Spode stone china

Stone china was developed and patented in 1800 by John and William Turner, but with 7 more years of the patent to run they went bankrupt in 1806. It seems likely that Spode waited until 1813 and the expiry of Turner's patent before producing his own stone china.  By 1817 it had become so popular that Queen Charlotte made a private visit to Spode's London showrooms and purchased a service for herself.
